Brittney (Kenney) Kemp was named the 16th head women’s basketball coach in St. Mary's College history on June 25, 2021. Kemp helped return the Seahawks to the conference and regional spotlight.

In her third campaign at SMCM, the Seahawks (14-12) claimed the No. 4 seed with a 6-6 league record and advanced to the semifinals of the United East Conference Volt Division Tournament. Olivia Liszt '27 became the second player under Kemp's mentorship to earn United East Volt Division Rookie of the Year honors.

During her second season at the helm, St. Mary's (17-8) finished tied for second in the regular-season conference standings with a 13-3 record, claiming the No. 3 seed after tiebreaker rules in the United East Conference Championship Tournament. The Seahawks' 17 wins marked the first time since the 2007-08 campaign that St. Mary's had won 15 or more games in a season. Additionally, Karon Williams '23 became the first-ever Seahawk women's basketball player to earn D3hoops.com All-Region honors and to pick up the conference Player of the Year award while Kemp claimed the program's first-ever league Coach of the Year award.

The Branford, Conn., native was named a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Thirty Under 30 honoree at the end of the 2021-22 season. The WBCA Thirty Under 30 program was created to recognize 30 up-and-coming women's basketball coaches aged 30 and under at all levels of the game. Each honoree has exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner, and attitude and professional association involvement.

Kemp's first campaign at St. Mary's saw the Seahawks post a 12-13 (10-6 UEC) overall record to mark the first 10-win season since 2012-13 and notch a nine-game improvement from the 2019-20 campaign when the Seahawks finished 3-22 (0-10 C2C). In addition, SMCM garnered 10 conference wins for the first time since the 2007-08 season and made the semifinals of a conference championship tournament for the first time since 1999-00.
