St. Mary's Captures Third Annual Seahawk Invitational

St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team cruised through the second day of competition of their own Third Annual Seahawk Invitational, finishing with a 4-0 overall mark and claiming the invitational title on Saturday afternoon. 

The Seahawks head into the Capital Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on October 30 with a 28-6 mark and a four-match win streak.  As the fourth seed, St. Mary's will host fifth-seeded University of Mary Washington on Tuesday at 7:00 in the Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.

Though Roanoke College (20-12) and Chowan University (23-10) had identical 3-1 tournament records, the Maroons were the tournament runners-up by virtue of their 3-1 (30-21, 33-31, 28-30, 30-21) victory over Chowan this morning.  Chowan placed third followed by Eastern Mennonite University (11-22) in fourth, Baruch College (17-21) in fifth, and John Jay College (10-21) in sixth.

Baruch College's junior libero Lizmarie Vasquez (Bronx, N.Y.) was voted the Most Valuable Player of the invitational by the coaches and Vasquez also earned a spot on the All-Invitational Team.  Joining Vasquez on All-Invitational Team were St. Mary's Jackie Reid (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), Chowan's Kristen Stroud (Chesterfield, Va.), Eastern Mennonite's Meagan Good (Alberta, Canada), and Roanoke's Jenna Burnop (Blacksburg, Va.).

The Seahawks handed Eastern Mennonite a 3-0 (30-15, 30-25, 30-11) setback behind a balanced attack.  Freshman Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) led the offense with nine kills, while fellow classmate Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) added eight.  A trio of Seahawks had seven kills each.

Sophomore Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) picked up 17 digs to pace the defense, while Obal had 10 and served up six aces.  Reid notched 12 digs.  EMU's Courtney Miller (Harrisonburg, Va.) collected 11 digs and three kills, while Good and Monika Burkholder (Linville, Va.) each had six kills.

The Bloodhounds of John Jay were no match for St. Mary's as the Seahawks rolled to a 30-9, 30-9, 30-11 victory, finishing with an impressive .451 hitting percentage for the match.

Ewing recorded 11 kills, while sophomore Jen Lamar (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) registered eight total blocks (five solo, three assists), served up four aces, and tallied three kills.
