Salisbury, Md. - The
nationally-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team claimed
its 13th straight Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship
with a 5-0 shutout victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland
Saturday afternoon.
The third-ranked Sea Gulls (18-1) wasted no time in getting on
the scoreboard as Kandice Hancock fired in a shot from the
top of the circle that was deflected into the goal by Ashley
Twigg for a 1-0 lead at 1:47.
It was 2-0 in favor of the CAC Tournament's top seed eight
minutes later when Hancock rifled in another shot that this time
was deflected by Caitlyn Ruffus for her first goal of the
day.
Ruffus tripled the score with her second goal of the contest as
she finished a pass from Lauren Correll at 17:35.
The Sea Gulls carried a 4-0 advantage into halftime following an
unassisted goal by Jami Gobao as Gobao put back a rebound
off the pads of senior Emily Richards (Silver
Spring, Md./Springbrook) at 24:16.
Salisbury just added one goal in the second half as Correll
notched her 21st goal of the season at 60:25 off of Hancock's third
assist of the game.
The Sea Gulls outshot St. Mary's (12-5), 16-1, and posted a 13-3
advantage of penalty corners. Three of Salisbury's goals were
a direct result of penalty corners.
Maria Ramoundos made no saves in earning her sixth
shutout of the season. Richards finished with five saves for
the Seahawks.
St. Mary's completes the 2007 campaign with a 12-5 overall
record, marking the third straight season that the Hawks have
finished the year with a 12-5 mark. The Seahawks went 5-1 in
CAC action which is the best conference record by any St. Mary's
field hockey squad since field hockey became a varsity sport in
1994.
