St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team needed overtime to defeat the University of Mary Washington, 2-1, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

A penalty corner was awarded to St. Mary's (3-1, 2-1 CAC) as time expired in the first 15-minute overtime period and as is the rule in field hockey, the corner was played out.

Senior forward Ali Femi (Easton, Md./Easton) put the ball into play up to the top of the circle to a waiting junior midfielder Emily Smithson (Midlothian, Va./James River).  Smithson took a dribble past a Mary Washington defender and then cracked a shot towards the far left corner where Femi deflected the ball into the back of the cage for St. Mary's 2-1 overtime win.

The win extends the Seahawks' win streak to three and also gives the Hawks three consecutives wins against Mary Washington (1-3, 1-1 CAC) in the series history, while the Eagles now hold a 14-3 advantage in the series.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles got on the board first at 48:09 when sophomore forward Chelsea Brown (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) took a feed from senior midfielder Kalyn Perkins (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and pushed the ball just inside the left post.

Junior forward Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) knotted the game at 53:18 after Norris lifted a loose ball over Mary Washington's freshman Erin Arnwine (Reston, Va./South Lakes) who had gone down on her side to stop the initial play inside the circle.

Senior Emily Richards (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) turned away four shots in the win, while Arnwine finished the game with five saves.

St. Mary's out-shot the Eagles, 15-9, while Mary Washington held the advantage in penalty corners, 18-9.

The Seahawks will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, September 16 when SMCM hosts Wesley College in conference action at 1:00.  The Eagles will return to action on Friday, September 14 when UMW travels to Carlisle, Pa. to face Dickinson College at 4:30.
