Washington, D.C. - After a scoreless first half, the Catholic University field hockey team rattled off four unanswered goals in the second half en route to posting a 4-0 shutout victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Both squads took a combined total of five shots and each goalie made one stop, while St. Mary's defensive unit broke up seven CUA penalty corners in the first 35 minutes to preserve the scoreless draw at halftime.

Catholic (4-4) came out firing in the second half as the Cardinals notched their first goal at 40:34 when freshman Liz McCormick (Broomhall, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart) completed a pass from senior midfielder Ro Dixon (Ardmore, Pa./Country Day Sacred Heart).

The Cardinals doubled their lead just over two minutes later when freshman midfielder Tracey Scanlon (North Wales, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy) tallied an unassisted goal.

Sophomore forward Abby Banholzer (Hartland, Wis./Trinity Academy) and senior forward Kelly Burke (Glendora, N.J./Bishop Eustace) combined for CUA's third goal as Burke fed Banholzer at 56:37.

Dixon then scored one of her own at 66:10 as she took a feed from sophomore Elizabeth Grumbein (Allentown, Pa./William Allen).

Catholic took twice as many shots as the Seahawks (4-6) as the Cardinals posted a 14-7 margin.  CUA also registered a 14-3 margin in penalty corners with seven in each half.

Junior Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Spalding) recorded three stops en route to her third shutout of the season.

Sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) picked up two saves in 70 minutes of action for SMCM.

The Seahawks look to snap their four-game losing streak this Saturday, October 4, when St. Mary's takes on conference foe, York (Pa.) College, at York at 1:00.
