Hoboken, N.J. - The St. Mary's
College of Maryland volleyball team split their matches at the
two-day 2008 Ducks Invitational hosted by Stevens Institute of
Technology to stand at 19-4 thus far for the 2008 campaign.
Sophomore outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney,
Md./Sherwood) earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after
notching 48 digs and 26 kills as well as eight total blocks as the
Seahawks (19-4) went 2-2 for the invitational. This is
Kodan's second selection to an All-Tournament Team
as she also was named to the 2008 Randolph-Macon All-Tournament
Team back on September 13.
In a 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 17-25, 11-25) loss to SUNY Cortland
(14-6), junior outside hitter Katie Ewing
(Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) was the only Seahawk with double
digit kills as Ewing picked up 13. Senior
middle blocker Becca Tursell (Ellicott City,
Md./Glenelg) added nine kills and served up four aces, while
Kodan and senior libero Jackie
Reid (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) tallied 15 digs
apiece.
St. Mary's rebounded with a sweep (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) of
Montclair State University (11-8) as Ewing
finished the match with a .615 attack percentage with eight kills
in 13 attempts. Setters Megan Graydon (West
Friendship, Md./Glenelg) and Jenn Feldmann
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each dished out 14 assists, while
junior outside hitter Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) had 10 digs and six kills.
The Seahawks started Saturday with a 3-0 (24-26, 24-26, 21-25)
loss to Stevens, who received votes in this week's AVCA Division
III Top 25 Poll. Both Ewing and sophomore
outside hitter Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood)
registered eight kills to pace the squad, while
Kodan denied 10 kill attempts and chipped in five
kills.
SMCM ended its tournament run on a high note with a 3-2 (19-25,
26-28, 25-7, 25-14, 15-8) triumph over Clarkson University (10-12)
as the Seahawks overcame a 2-0 deficit.
Gregorini and Ewing led the team
with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Tursell
contributed to the win with eight kills, four aces, and four total
blocks. Kodan had 18 digs and nine kills,
while Graydon handed out 26 assists.
St. Mary's will return to action next Wednesday, October 8 when
the Seahawks travel to Dover, Del. to take on Wesley College in a
Capital Athletic Conference tilt at 7:00.
