St. Mary's Splits at Ducks Invitational

Hoboken, N.J. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team split their matches at the two-day 2008 Ducks Invitational hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology to stand at 19-4 thus far for the 2008 campaign.

Sophomore outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after notching 48 digs and 26 kills as well as eight total blocks as the Seahawks (19-4) went 2-2 for the invitational.  This is Kodan's second selection to an All-Tournament Team as she also was named to the 2008 Randolph-Macon All-Tournament Team back on September 13.

In a 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 17-25, 11-25) loss to SUNY Cortland (14-6), junior outside hitter Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) was the only Seahawk with double digit kills as Ewing picked up 13.  Senior middle blocker Becca Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) added nine kills and served up four aces, while Kodan and senior libero Jackie Reid (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) tallied 15 digs apiece.

St. Mary's rebounded with a sweep (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) of Montclair State University (11-8) as Ewing finished the match with a .615 attack percentage with eight kills in 13 attempts.  Setters Megan Graydon (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg) and Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each dished out 14 assists, while junior outside hitter Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) had 10 digs and six kills.

The Seahawks started Saturday with a 3-0 (24-26, 24-26, 21-25) loss to Stevens, who received votes in this week's AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll.  Both Ewing and sophomore outside hitter Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) registered eight kills to pace the squad, while Kodan denied 10 kill attempts and chipped in five kills.

SMCM ended its tournament run on a high note with a 3-2 (19-25, 26-28, 25-7, 25-14, 15-8) triumph over Clarkson University (10-12) as the Seahawks overcame a 2-0 deficit.  Gregorini and Ewing led the team with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  Tursell contributed to the win with eight kills, four aces, and four total blocks.  Kodan had 18 digs and nine kills, while Graydon handed out 26 assists.

St. Mary's will return to action next Wednesday, October 8 when the Seahawks travel to Dover, Del. to take on Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at 7:00.

All-Tournament Team: Floriana Garo (CCNY); Sarah Byrne (Stevens); Brittney Horton (Cortland); Michelle Gaufman (Cortland); Jenna Stock (Clarkson); Claire Kodan (St. Mary's).
