Haverford, Pa. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team kicked off the 2008
campaign on the right foot as the Seahawks posted a 3-1 mark at the
two-day, seven-team Haverford College Invitational this past
weekend. St. Mary's notched wins over Susquehanna University,
Cabrini College and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Junior outside hitter Katie Ewing
(Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) earned a spot on the
All-Tournament Team after tallying 40 kills in 82 attempts for a
.378 hitting percentage.

The Seahawks opened up action Saturday morning with a 3-0 (26-24,
25-14, 25-21) sweep of Susquehanna as junior outside hitter
Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial)
picked up seven kills and junior middle blocker Jen
Lamar (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) registered a .417
attack percentage on six kills, one error, and 12 attempts.
Junior libero Jackie Reid (Poolesville,
Md./Poolesville) had 12 digs.

Ewing paced the Hawks with 12 kills in their 3-1
(26-24, 22-25, 21-25, 18-25) loss to No. 18 Haverford in their
second match of the tournament. Sophomores Jenn
Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Katie
Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Reid
combined for 42 digs as Feldmann had 15,
Obal 14, and Reid came in with
13.

Ewing and Gregorini both reached double
figure kills in leading SMCM to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-10)
win over Cabrini Sunday morning. Gregorini
collected 12 and notched a .526 hitting percentage, while
Ewing had 11. Ewing and
senior middle blocker Becca Tursell (Ellicott
City, Md./Glenelg) teamed up for four block solos and 10 block
assists.
Coast
Guard Box Score
Sophomore outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney,
Md./Sherwood) and Ewing each tallied 12 kills in
helping the Seahawks post a 3-1 (26-28, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18)
victory over Coast Guard. Reid had 14 digs,
while Gregorini added 13.
The Seahawks are idle until Saturday, September 6 when St.
Mary's hosts a tri-match with Rowan University and Goucher College
in the Athletic & Recreation Center Arena. The Hawks
first match will be at 11:00 a.m. against Rowan followed by their
match with Goucher at 3:00. Rowan will take on Goucher at
1:00.
