St. Mary's City, Md. - It was an exciting finish to today's non-conference field hockey match as St. Mary's College of Maryland needed 100 minutes plus two rounds of penalty strokes to edge Catholic University, 3-2 in penalty strokes, Thursday afternoon.

St. Mary's junior goalkeeper Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) shined in the second round of penalty strokes as Lauhoff denied three of Catholic's four stroke attempts.  The Seahawks (5-4) capitalized on their first three strokes of the second round to clinch the victory, winning the shootout by an 8-6 margin.

Catholic (6-2), whose three-game win streak is snapped by today's loss, struck first at 28:52 as junior Tory Gagliardi (Pilesgrove, N.J./Archmere Academy) came off the bench to score off a penalty corner with freshman defender Brynn Becker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and junior Kendall Petschauer (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) assisting on the play.  Gagliardi's goal proved to be the difference in the first 35 minutes as Catholic headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Samantha Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored twice in a 1:02 span to propel St. Mary's to a 2-1 advantage with 26:57 remaining in regulation.  Locke knotted the contest at 1-1 when she drove the ball just inside the left post off an assist by junior midfielder Allie Skiest (Arnold, Md./Seton Keough).  Locke then gave the home team a 2-1 margin as she deflected in freshman midfielder Natalie Hackstaff's (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's Academy) pass into the circle.

St. Mary's was 1:22 away from winning in regulation when the Cardinals' leading scorer, junior forward Meredith Chandler (Tiburon, Calif./St. Ignatius), was able to put the ball in the goal following a crazy scramble by the far left post to force overtime.

Both goalies played exceptionally well in the two, 15-minute overtime periods, standing up to the offensive pressure and helping to keep their team's chances alive.

Catholic dominated penalty corners, 18 to 7, as well as shots, 31 to 13.

Lauhoff matched her career-high with 15 stops while receiving additional support from her defensive line as senior captain Julia Puzak (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) notched two defensive saves.

Senior Marian Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Spalding) tallied six saves in defeat.

St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, October 3 when the Seahawks welcome the College of Wooster to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at noon as part of the Hawktober Festival events.

Catholic looks to get back in the win column on October 7 when the Cardinals host Goucher College in Landmark Conference play at 4:30 pm.
