forward Sheree Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna)
found the back of the cage just three minutes into the first
overtime period to help Wesley College advance to the semifinals as
the Wolverines notched a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Mary's
College of Maryland in the first round of the 2009 Capital Athletic
Conference Field Hockey Tournament.
Junior forward Brooke Tadlock (Middletown,
Del./Middletown) assisted on
Pleasanton's game-winner at 73:04
as fourth-seeded Wesley (12-8) overcame a 2-1 deficit with 1:34
remaining in regulation. The Wolverines will now face
top-seeded Salisbury University in the CAC semifinals on Wednesday.
Wesley jumped on the Seahawks (8-8) early as freshman
Abigail Hill (Dover, Del./Lake Forest) notched her
first of two goals on the day at 10:20. St. Mary's evened the
contest at 1-1 at 25:51 when freshman midfielder Brooke
Masimore (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) notched an
unassisted goal, sending the teams into halftime tied with one goal
apiece.
Freshman forward Ali McIntosh (Stevensville,
Md./Kent Island) gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead late in the second
half as McIntosh scored an unassisted goal at
58:29.
With St. Mary's closing in on a first round victory,
Hill's second tally of the afternoon could not
have come at a better time as her unassisted goal at 68:26 sent the
contest into overtime.
St. Mary's dominated offensively all day long, firing off 21
shots with 14 being on goal, but junior goalkeeper Sarah
Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) was up to the task,
making 12 saves and shutting out the Seahawks' leading scorer,
freshman forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg). By shutting down Parker, the
Wolverines snapped her six-game consecutive goal scoring streak.
Wesley took 11 shots and posted a 9-8 margin in penalty corners.
Junior Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) notched
six stops for St. Mary's.
The Seahawks ends the 2009 season with an 8-8 overall record and
a 2-4 conference mark.
