St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior midfielder Kristen Haynor's (Oakton, Va./James Madison) early first half goal proved to be all University of Mary Washington needed to advance to the Capital Athletic Conference field hockey championship game as the third-seeded Eagles eliminated second-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland, 1-0, in semifinal action Wednesday afternoon.
Mary Washington (13-7) awaits the winner of the No. 4-seed Wesley College at No. 1-seed Salisbury University game which begins at 6:00 pm tonight. The championship game will be played Saturday, November 6 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The loss brings St. Mary's (11-6) season to a close. The Seahawks had a stupendous 2010 campaign, receiving the program's first-ever national ranking; notching a program second-best 11 wins; and starting the season with a 6-0 record.
Haynor netted the game's lone goal at 6:14 as she converted a penalty stroke for her fifth tally of the season.
Late in the first half, it looked like the Seahawks had evened up the score but sophomore forward Brooke Masimore's (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) goal was called back because it was shot from outside the 16-yard circle.
St. Mary's really brought the pressure on in the final seven minutes of the contest, notching three penalty corners in rapid succession that led to two solid scoring opportunities. Sophomore forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) fired off a shot that was on target but stopped by senior goalkeeper Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) while junior forward Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) missed just wide right with her deflection.
Mary Washington by no means dominated the game, just edging the Seahawks in shots, 6-5, and posting a 6-4 margin in penalty corners.
Bowdren picked up three saves in the win while senior keeper Lydia Garcia (Bowie, Md./Seton) finished her collegiate career with one save.
