Box Score

Baltimore, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey has started the 2010 campaign with an undefeated 3-0 mark, the first time ever in program history, as the Seahawks notched a 6-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College in a neutral site game played at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks (3-0) have twice opened up a season with a 2-0 mark, the last time coming in 2008 before dropping the third contest of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Shackelford (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) paced St. Mary's in the win with two goals while fellow classmate Ali McIntosh (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) added a goal and an assist.

St. Mary's outshot the Marlins (0-2), 23-1, in the first half en route to a 4-0 halftime advantage.  The Seahawks' first goal came at 2:58 as Shackelford tipped in a loose ball at the far post.  McIntosh picked up her second tally of the season at 22:47 as she deflected in junior midfielder Sam Locke's (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) pass to the far post.

It became 3-0 at 31:53 as sophomore Ellen Hackstaff (Denver, Colo./St. Mary's Academy) scored an unassisted goal as she reverse flicked a loose ball into the near top corner.  The Seahawks headed into intermission with a four-goal cushion as Shackelford nabbed her second goal of the game with eight seconds remaining in the half off an assist by senior midfielder Allie Skiest (Arnold, Md./Seton Keough).

Finishing with a 33-4 shot advantage, St. Mary's continued its dominance in the second half as sophomore forward Lauriann Parker (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) tallied her team-high fourth goal, dodging a pair of Marlin defenders before finding the back of the cage.  First-year Gabby Collins (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded her first collegiate goal at 58:34 to wrap up the scoring.

The trio of Seahawk goalies combined for two saves and the season's first shutout.  First-year Anastasia Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) registered the two stops in the second half.

VWC's junior Chelsea Baker (Norfolk, Va./Granby) made 14 stops while sophomore Taylor Harding (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) had a defensive save.

St. Mary's will enjoy what's left of the Labor Day Weekend before hitting the field against York (Pa.) College on Saturday, September 11 at noon in the Seahawks' home and Capital Athletic Conference opener.
