#18 Mary Washington Outlasts Seahawk Field Hockey in OT

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore forward Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va./McLean) propelled #18 University of Mary Washington to a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime win over the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team in a key Capital Athletic Conference contest Tuesday afternoon.

Baker found the back of the cage with 53.9 seconds remaining in the first extra period, rifling a shot from the top of the circle to clinch the win for Mary Washington (13-4, 4-2 CAC) as the Eagles overcame a 1-0 deficit.

The win moves Mary Washington into third in the conference standings while St. Mary's (5-9, 3-3 CAC) slips to fourth as regular-season league action for all CAC teams wraps up on October 25.

Following a scoreless first half, first-year forward Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) struck with her sixth goal of the season as Decker put back the rebound of sophomore midfielder Rachel Heiss' (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) shot which was denied by first-year goalkeeper Emily Badis (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett), giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 41:56.

St. Mary's was two minutes and thirty seconds away from its fourth league win of the season and upsetting Mary Washington but the Eagles had other plans as they were awarded a penalty corner.  Junior midfielder Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) inserted the ball to fellow classmate Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) who ripped a shot from the top of the circle that bounced off the right post into the goal.

Mary Washington fired off 28 shots but just 11 were on target while the Seahawks took six shots (four on cage).  Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Wash (Yorktown, Va./York) recorded a career-best nine stops in the loss.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Saturday, October 22 when the Seahawks welcome Wesley College to Seahawk Stadium for another conference match-up at 1:00 pm.  Prior to the start of Saturday's contest, the Seahawks' five seniors, Lauren Bennett (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), Sam Locke (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), Kelsey McKeon (Street, Md./North Harford), Jackie Reymann (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville), and Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County), will be honored.
