Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team battled the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington for nearly 75 minutes but did not pull off the upset as Mary Washington tallied a 1-0 overtime win over St. Mary's in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon.
Despite taking only one shot the entire contest, St. Mary's (7-6, 1-3 CAC) hung tough with the conference-leading Eagles to force an extra period.
The Seahawks only shot of the game came off the stick of sophomore Paige Decker (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) at 3:02 of the first half. Decker's shot was prevented from hitting the back of the cage by senior midfielder Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va.) coming up with the defensive save.
Charney proved to be the hero in overtime as she notched her team-leading 18th goal of the season at 74:24 following an Eagle penalty corner just 36 seconds earlier. Mary Washington had started the extra period with a shot by sophomore defender Amy Abernathy (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 73:20, which was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg).
Bishop finished with 10 saves on 19 shots faced while the Seahawk defense did a fantastic job in squelching 17 Eagle penalty corners. St. Mary's earned seven penalty corners, including six in the first half.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, October 20 when St. Mary's welcomes York College of Pennsylvania to Seahawk Stadium for another league tilt at 12:30 pm. Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the Seahawks will recognize their five seniors – Amy Eaton, Ali McIntosh, Lauriann Parker, Erin Shackelford and Katie Wisniewski.
