Box Score Elizabethtown, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit in posting a 3-2 non-conference victory over host Elizabethtown College Friday night. Four Seahawks notched double-digit kills, including senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) who recorded her second double-double of the season on 12 kills and 10 digs.
Elizabethtown (19-9) took advantage of the Seahawks' poor hitting in the first two sets to tally set wins of 25-19 and 25-16. The Blue Jays registered a hitting percentage of .221 between the first two games while St. Mary's percentage was only .012.
The Seahawks (14-7) regrouped during the 10-minute break between the second and third sets, edging Elizabethtown 30-28 to close the gap to 2-1 in the third. The Blue Jays overcame a 10-2 deficit to knot the game at 16-16. St. Mary's pulled ahead to 20-16 but could not shake off the hosts as Elizabethtown equaled the efforts for the second draw of the set. Eight more tied scores followed before kills by junior right-side hitter Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) sealed the win.
It was another close one in the fourth as the set featured 12 tied scores and four lead changes. After a St. Mary's error allowed the Blue Jays to knot the score at 23-23, ninth-year head coach Morris Davis called a timeout to settle down his team. The one-minute break helped as the Seahawks responded with kills by senior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) and Rindone for the 25-23 win to force a fifth and deciding set.
Four consecutive Elizabethtown errors gave St. Mary's the opportunity to turn a 7-5 setback into a 9-7 lead that the Seahawks would never relinquish en route to a 15-8 fifth game victory and the 3-2 match win.
Mullennix led the Seahawks with a season-best 16 kills while first-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) added 14 kills and 6.0 total blocks (three solo). Klima was the fourth Seahawk with double-digit kills as she contributed 10 and six block assists.
Senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) picked up her seventh double-double of the season with a career-high 30 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) paced the defensive effort with a season-high 23 digs while Blanc tallied 18.
The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow afternoon as St. Mary's remains in Pennsylvania, this time traveling to Lancaster for a tri-match at Franklin & Marshall College. The Seahawks will face Washington College first at 1:00 pm before taking on the host at 3:00 pm.
