Seahawk Volleyball Falls in CAC Semifinals

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – The quest for a Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament title ended for the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team Friday night as the third-seeded Seahawks dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to second-seeded Marymount (Va.) University in semifinal action.

The loss unfortunately brings St. Mary's 2012 campaign to an end with a 21-9 overall record.  It is the fifth 20-win season under the leadership of ninth-year head coach Morris Davis.  It is also the seventh winning season that the Seahawks have posted with Davis' guidance.

First-year middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and senior outside hitter Jenn Rindone (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) were the only two Seahawks to notch double-digit kills while Rindone recorded her fourth double-double of the season with double-figure digs.

Goodspeed tallied a dozen kills as well as 8.0 total blocks on two solo blocks and six block assists while Rindone added 10 kills and a team-best 20 digs.

St. Mary's came out swinging in the first set as the Seahawks posted a 25-21 victory behind 15 kills and three blocks.  The first set featured 11 tied scores and three lead changes with the visitors breaking a 17-17 draw with an 8-4 run to close out the first game.

Marymount (26-9) hit over .200 in the second set as well as in the third to stake a 2-1 lead in the match.  The Saints never trailed in the second game en route to a 25-14 win as St. Mary's tallied a negative attack percentage.  The third set witnessed 13 tied scores and four lead changes.  Marymount held on for a 25-22 triumph in the third, using a 4-1 spurt to end a 21-21 stalemate.

The Seahawks regrouped for a 25-19 win in the fourth set to force the fifth and decisive set.  St. Mary's never trailed in the set as the Saints tied it up at 3-3 but in no way gained the lead.

Like the previous four sets, the fifth set was hotly contested with four tied scores and one lead change.  After a 3-3 tied score, Marymount by no means fell behind in the score but the Seahawks overcame a 13-10 deficit with a kill by sophomore outside hitter Jenahye' Johnson (Randallstown, Md./Bowie) and two Saint errors to knot the set at 13-13.  MU closed out the set with a 2-0 run for the 15-13 triumph.

Johnson put forth a solid effort with a season-best 7.0 total blocks on six solo blocks and one block assist.  Junior libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) picked up 13 digs while senior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) contributed a dozen digs.  Senior setter Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) finished the night with 28 assists and eight digs.
