St. Mary's Field Hockey Falls to No. 8 Mary Washington

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team played their second consecutive Top 10 team, facing No. 8 University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks dropped a 5-0 decision to Mary Washington but the score is not indicative of St. Mary's level of play.

The Seahawks (7-4, 0-2 CAC) came out firing, testing Mary Washington's junior goalkeeper Emily Badis (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) early and often in the first half. St. Mary's owned a 6-2 shot advantage in the first 10 minutes of the game, forcing Badis to make three saves.

However, the Eagles (13-0, 2-0 CAC) broke through first on their fourth shot as sophomore defender Kathleen Namey (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) fired in a shot from the right side of the goal into the left corner at 12:41 off a pass from first-year forward Christine Loehr (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield).

St. Mary's continued to attack the goal and peppered Badis with nine shots in the first 35 minutes, seven of which Badis was able to deny. Mary Washington headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead as junior forward Christine Downie (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) deflected in a loose ball at the far post with 1:46 left in the half.

The Eagles tacked on three more in the second half, scoring goals at 39:42, 44:32, and 60:20. Mary Washington finished with a 23-20 shot margin as well as a 15-14 edge in penalty corners. The Seahawks played strong in the final 35 minutes but Badis continued to stand like a wall in collecting the team's sixth shutout win of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) put up nine saves for St. Mary's while junior defender Daniella Hanacek (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) added her second defensive save of the season. Badis finished the contest with 11 stops while sophomore defender Carlee Budd (Delmar, Del./Delmar) tallied a defensive save as well.

The Seahawks hope to snap their two-game skid on Saturday, October 19th when St. Mary's travels to Frostburg State University for another conference tilt at 7:00 pm.
