Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Three Seahawks finished with double-digit kills as the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team snapped their five-match skid with a sweep of Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Tonight's win keeps St. Mary's (16-8, 2-4 CAC) playoffs hopes alive as the Seahawks are now tied with York College of Pennsylvania (15-14, 2-4 CAC) for the sixth and final CAC tournament berth. The team has two conference games remaining – at Marymount (Va.) University on October 30 and at Frostburg State University on November 2.
Sophomore middle blocker Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) posted a hitting percentage of .520 in leading the Seahawks with 14 kills while senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) picked up 11 kills in her first match back since October 17. Sophomore captain Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) had a near double-double as Fisher posted 10 kills and nine digs.
First-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) matched her season-best with 30 assists while adding four digs and two kills. First-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) continued her strong presence at the libero position with 15 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) served up a career-best five aces.
St. Mary's rolled to a 25-8 win in the first set as Goodspeed put down five kills and Wesley (15-12, 1-6 CAC) hit -0.080 for the game. It was a different story in the next set as the Wolverines regrouped and jumped out to a 5-1 advantage. The Seahawks used a 10-3 run to overtake the lead, holding on for the 25-22 triumph.
It was all St. Mary's in the third and final set as the Seahawks rushed out to a 19-2 gain. Wesley clawed at the deficit but was unable to dig out of the hole as back-to-back kills by Klima and Goodspeed sealed the 25-14 victory.
First-year setter Ashley Klein (Severn, Md./Old Mill) contributed to Wesley's offense with 19 assists while sophomore libero Meghan Marshall (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) did her part defensively with 15 digs as the Wolverines drop their eighth straight match.
St. Mary's travels to Arlington, Virginia for its next CAC match at Marymount University on Wednesday, October 30. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
