Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Sixth-year head coach Katie Lange '06 collected her 50th career win Saturday afternoon as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team rebounded from their mid-week loss with a 2-1 shootout victory over Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Senior Day.
Coach Lange now holds a 50-47 career record as the mentor of the Seahawk field hockey program. Under her leadership, St. Mary's has made the conference championship tournament every season, finishing as the runner-up in 2008 and advancing to the semifinals in 2010 and 2012. She just needs seven wins to overtake her predecessor, Megan Block, as the school's all-time wins leader.
Today's victory kept the Seahawks' (9-5, 2-3 CAC) playoff chances alive and strong as St. Mary's looks to notch one of the tournament's five berths. The team is now fourth in the conference standings ahead of Wesley (8-9, 1-4 CAC), York College of Pennsylvania (4-11, 1-4 CAC), and Frostburg State University (6-13, 1-5 CAC). SMCM travels to York for the regular-season finale on Tuesday, October 29 at 4:00 pm.
For the second straight season, St. Mary's headed into overtime with the Wolverines but this time the Seahawks came out on top in the one-on-one shootout by a 2-1 margin. Seahawk junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) was stellar in the cage as she denied Wesley's first three attempts, including turning away a stroke by senior midfielder Madison Leone (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) who was fouled during her eight-second shootout attempt.
First-year Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) got the Seahawks on the board first in the shootout as Wolf collected the rebound from sophomore Sarah Daniels (Pocomoke, Md./Washington) initial save and scooped it over Daniels for the 1-0 margin. Junior forward Lauren Mears (Princess Anne, Md./Washington) evened up the shootout.
Bishop denied Wesley's fifth and final shooter, setting up sophomore defender Ally Dahlen (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) as Dahlen pulled around Daniels for the game-winner.
St. Mary's posted a 13-8 margin in shots while Wesley edged the Seahawks, 9-8, in penalty corners. Bishop ended the game with three saves while Daniels posted 11 saves in the Wolverines' fifth loss in a row.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead at 20:46 as senior midfielder Claire Kortyna (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) tipped in a deflection by first-year forward Alli Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton). Wesley forced overtime as senior forward Brittany Blacksten (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) scored her fifth of the season at 50:40 off an assist by junior forward Gracie Daniels (Princess Anne, Md./Washington).
