Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team returned to their winning ways Saturday afternoon with a pair of wins over Penn State Harrisburg and Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Seahawks (15-3, 1-0 CAC) opened up Capital Athletic Conference action with a 3-0 sweep of league newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg (4-15, 0-2 CAC), dominating the match with set scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-11. St. Mary's used 39 kills, eight service aces and four total blocks to keep the Lions winless in conference play.
Sophomores Mandy Goodspeed (Columbia, Md./Atholton) and Autumn Fisher (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) paced the attack in the win over Penn State Harrisburg with double-digit kills. Goodspeed totaled 16.5 points on 15 kills and three block assists while Fisher contributed 12 points on 11 kills and a pair of block assists.
First-year Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) collected 10 digs to lead the defense while first-year setter Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) dished 18 assists.
St. Mary's faced stiffer competition in their match against Virginia Wesleyan (11-7) but came through with set scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-21. In the first two sets, the score was only tied twice – once in each set – however, the third set witnessed five tied scores and four lead changes.
The Seahawks erased a 14-11 deficit in the third set with an 8-0 run, reclaiming the lead for good. Virginia Wesleyan pulled within 22-21 but a pair of Fisher kills and a Marlin attacking error sealed the match win for St. Mary's.
Goodspeed put forth another solid effort with a match-best 13 kills and five block assists for 15.5 points while senior captain Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied 10.5 points on eight kills and four total blocks (one solo). Fisher chipped in 10 points on 10 kills. Graf and sophomore setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) kept the offense moving with 17 and 15 assists, respectively.
Hill and sophomore defensive specialist Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) led the Seahawks' 54-dig performance with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, October 8th as St. Mary's welcomes Salisbury University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a conference match at 7:00 pm.
