Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team played tough against No. 15 University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. St. Mary's suffered a 2-0 setback in Capital Athletic Conference action as the Eagles scored once in each half.
Before the first whistle, the Seahawks honored their four seniors - Emily Bishop (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), Grace Reingruber (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Emily Smithers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) - for their commitment and dedication to the St. Mary's field hockey program.
St. Mary's defense kept the Eagles off the scoreboard until 27:31 when Mary Washington made good on a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Haley Kane (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) inserted the ball to the top of the circle where senior defender Kathleen Namey (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) rifled a shot into the lower left corner.
UMW (11-3, 3-0 CAC) held the Seahawks (6-7, 1-3 CAC) without a shot in the first half and owned a 3-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Eagles increased their lead to 2-0 at 43:48. Senior forward Jenna Steele (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) sent a diagonal pass to the far post where sophomore forward Noor Varjabedian (Falls Church, Va./McLean) was waiting with the deflection for her fourth tally of the season.
St. Mary's responded with a flurry of shots during the 56th minute as one was saved by first-year goalkeeper Jessica Cavolt (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Collegiate); one went off the post; and another was denied by senior defender Carlee Budd (Delmar, Del./Delmar).
Mary Washington finished with a 9-5 shot advantage while posting a 6-2 margin in corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made three saves in St. Mary's second straight loss while Cavolt picked up two stops in Mary Washington's fifth consecutive win.
The Seahawks will play their second to last regular-season conference game on Wednesday, October 21 when St. Mary's travels to the Eastern Shore to face No. 4 Salisbury University (7-2, 1-0 CAC) under the lights at 6:00 p.m.
