Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – It was another heartbreaking defeat for the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team Tuesday afternoon as Randolph-Macon College won the shootout to post a 3-2 non-conference victory. St. Mary's (2-3) has now lost three consecutive overtime matchups.
Senior midfielder Mackenzie Turner (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) tallied the game-winner in the second round of the shootout, breaking a 2-2 draw from the first round. The Seahawks had an opportunity to extend the shootout but sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Stanley (Bumpass, Va./Louisa County) made a huge stop to secure Randolph-Macon's (5-2) third straight win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished the thrilling contest with four saves while sophomore Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) picked up a defensive save. Stanley registered 20 saves in 100 minutes of action while Turner and sophomore defender Erin Cunningham (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) each had a defensive save.
St. Mary's dominated the game from start to finish, posting a 43-9 advantage in shots as well as a 19-7 margin in penalty corners.
The Yellow Jackets struck first at 12:22 as senior defender Renee Greenslade (Hamilton, Bermuda/St. Margaret's) put back a rebound for her third goal of the season. Junior forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) evened up the score a few minutes before halftime off a pass from senior captain Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) at 31:19. The two sides headed into halftime tied 1-1.
Randolph-Macon went up 2-1 early in the second half as junior midfielder Kaitee Nicholas (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) converted a penalty stroke for her first tally of the year at 36:19. Once again, less than three minutes from the final buzzer, the Seahawks tied up the score as sophomore midfielder Megan Moore (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) corralled a loose ball and scored it into the left side of the cage.
In the first extra period, St. Mary's outshot the visitors, 7-0, while corners were even at one apiece. Stanley came up with three saves to force a second OT. The Seahawks then put up a 7-2 margin in shots as well as a 5-1 advantage in corners in the second 15-minute period. Stanley added another three stops while Thompson made one stop.
The Seahawks will look to put an end to their three-game skid when St. Mary's welcomes Bridgewater (Va.) College (0-5) to Seahawk Stadium for a non-conference game on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m.
