Box Score Winchester, Va. – First-year midfielder Mollie Belson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) knotted the game early in the first half as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team faced Shenandoah University Wednesday night. Shenandoah, however, outlasted the Seahawks for the 2-1 non-conference win under the lights.
St. Mary's (3-4) is now 2-2 against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponents following tonight's action. The Seahawks have two more ODAC foes this weekend as the team travels to Harrisonburg, Virginia to take on Eastern Mennonite University (2-5) on Saturday, September 26 before hosting Washington and Lee University (3-4) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
Shenandoah (2-4) posted an early 1-0 lead as first-year forward Kayla Alderman (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) finished off a pass from senior defender Alana Meadows (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) at 3:23 following the Hornets' first penalty corner of the contest.
Belson struck for the Seahawks just over eight minutes later as she tallied an unassisted goal for her second score of the season. Belson lofted a 10-yard shot over everybody's head and just under the crossbar for the equalizer.
The 1-1 draw held until about 10 minutes into the start of the second half as Shenandoah's game-winning goal followed another Hornet penalty corner. Senior midfielder Kelani Bailey (Norfolk, Va./Maury) notched her second of the season off a feed from fellow classmate Presha Merritt (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) at 45:25.
The Seahawks earned a 10-8 edge in shots while Shenandoah staked a 7-6 margin in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and the Seahawk defense registered one save while junior Jessica Brown (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) collected two stops as Shenandoah snapped a four-game skid.
