Box Score 2 Lynchburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team went 1-1 Friday night at the tri-match hosted by Randolph College. St. Mary's succumbed to a 3-1 setback at the hands of Lynchburg before sweeping host Randolph to move to 7-5 on the season.
Head coach Jeremy Sands expressed, "We started a little slow tonight as we had to adjust for some lineup changes. The team pulled it together and fought through the challenges as a team. We had strong contributions from our freshmen tonight as Hannah Krauss and Meghan Kelley really stepped up. Senior Autumn Fisher rose to the occasion again by playing out of position again for the sake of the team."
Lynchburg (5-9) claimed the first two sets 25-19, 25-19 before St. Mary's responded with a 26-24 win in the third. First-year outside hitter Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the Seahawks in the third set win with four kills while Alli and Mimi Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) each contributed three kills. The Hornets finished out the match with another 25-19 win in the fourth.
Kelley and A. Graf each tallied 13 kills in the loss while M. Graf collected 18 assists and four total blocks (1 BS, 3 BA). Junior libero Carissa Hill (Lanham, Md./Pallotti) led the team defensively with 22 digs while A. Graf added another double-double to her tally with a dozen. First-year Hannah Krauss (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) picked up four total blocks as well with four block assists.
St. Mary's rolled to a 3-0 win over Randolph (2-13) by posting wins of 25-13, 27-25, 25-16 in the match. This time, Krauss and A. Graf commanded the Seahawk offense with a match-best 11 kills apiece while senior setter Grace Chao (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) dished out 20 assists. Krauss added three total blocks (1 BS, 2 BA) while A. Graf registered her seventh double-double of the season with a match-high 16 digs and served up three aces.
Hill and junior Meghan Griffiths (Hughesville, Md./La Plata) each finished with double-digit digs as well. Hill posted 13 while Griffiths recorded a career-best 10 in the team's seventh win of the season.
Sands ended with, "I would have liked to walk away with two wins tonight but I'm grateful our team kept up the fight and walked out with one victory and a stronger composure."
The Seahawks return home on Wednesday, September 30 as St. Mary's opens up Capital Athletic Conference action with Salisbury University (11-6) at 7:00 p.m. in the Michael P.
