Seahawk Volleyball Splits at Baruch Invite

New York, N.Y. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team finished up the Baruch College Invite with a win and a loss Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's swept the host Baruch Bearcats, 3-0, (25-7, 25-6, 25-17) before falling in four to New York University, 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 17-25, 22-25).

St. Mary's (Md.) 3, Baruch 0 (25-7, 25-6, 25-17)

How It Happened

  • St. Mary's opened up the first set with a 3-0 run in route to a 25-7 win. Outside hitters Alli Graf (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Meghan Kelley (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each had five kills.
  • The Seahawks continued their dominance in the second set, jumping out to an 18-3 advantage before a service ace by sophomore libero Marissa Dangler (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) put the game away and give the team a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Baruch stepped up its game in the third set, pulling within 16-12 before St. Mary's won nine of the final 14 points for its fifth straight win.

For The Seahawks (12-4)

  • Graf (17 kills, 9 digs, 3 assists); Mia Griffiths (34 assists, 5 digs); Carissa Hill (11 digs); Meghan Griffiths (10 digs, 6 kills).
  • St. Mary's tallied a season-best .368 attack percentage for the match with three service aces and 3.0 team blocks.

For Baruch (4-10)

  • Alessandra Chavez (4 kills, 7 digs); Cindy Cui (4 assists, 5 digs); Stephanie Cornwell (4 assists, 3 digs); Marisa Bou (9 digs).
  • The Bearcats attacked at a -.124 clip with three service aces and 2.0 team blocks.

NYU 3, St. Mary's (Md.) 1 (25-16, 20-25, 17-25, 22-25)

How It Happened

  • Riding the momentum from their win over Baruch, the Seahawks posted a 25-16 victory in the first set. Graf lead the team in the win with seven kills.
  • NYU responded by erasing a 19-17 deficit with an 8-1 run to capture the second set, 25-20, and even up the match at 1-1.
  • Following a 10-10 draw, the Violets opened up a 20-13 advantage before sealing the 25-17 third set victory.
  • St. Mary's hung tough with NYU in the final set, taking a 21-20 lead on a Kelley kill and then closing the gap to 23-22 before the Violets scored the last two points of the set for the 3-1 match win.

For The Seahawks (12-5)

  • Graf (21 kills, 15 digs, 4 service aces); Kelley (12 kills); Mia Griffiths (career-best 41 assists, 4 digs, 2 service aces); Dangler (19 digs); Carissa Hill (16 digs); Meghan Griffiths (10 digs, 2 kills).
  • St. Mary's hit .130 for the match with six service aces and 1.0 team blocks.

For NYU (12-3)

  • Caroline Rapp (10 kills, 13 digs); Jenna Dickey (10 kills, 2 digs, 2 block assists); Annie Singh (10 kills, 4 digs); Kathryn Goyette (26 assists, 11 digs, 2 kills, 2 block assists); Stephanie Mao (16 digs, 2 assists, 2 service aces).
  • The Violets put up a .220 hitting percentage with seven service aces and 8.0 team blocks in their ninth consecutive win.

Notes

  • Graf picked up her eighth double-double of the season in the loss to NYU.
