Winchester, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team struck first Wednesday afternoon but could not hold on for the win as a pair of second-half goals powered Shenandoah University to the 2-1 non-conference win.

How It Happened

• Senior defender Sophie Michel (Westminster, Md./Westminster), this week's Capital Athletic  Conference Defensive Player of the Week, put St. Mary's on the scoreboard early, scoring off a penalty corner at 4:42 as junior midfielder Mollie Belson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) inserted the pass from the endline.
• Shots were even at 6-6 in the first 35 minutes as the Seahawks owned a 1-0 lead at halftime.
• Shenandoah made the most of its three second-half shots, connecting for two goals.
• Katelyn Curtis knotted up the game at 1-all with an unassisted tally at 46:56.
• The Hornets then claimed the lead with less than six minutes left in regulation as Daphne Leighty finished off a pass from Melissa DeiTos.
• The Shenandoah defense held St. Mary's without a single shot over the final 35 minutes.

For the Seahawks (3-5)

• Scorer: Michel (1 goal); Belson (1 assist)
• Goalkeeper: Alyssa Thompson (2 saves, 2 goals allowed, 70:00)
• St. Mary's finished the game with six first-half shots (five on goal) and five penalty corners.

For Shenandoah (4-3)

• Scorers: Curtis (1 goal); Leighty (1 goal); DeiTos (1 assist)
• Goalkeeper: Isabella Morande (4 saves, 1 goal allowed, 70:00)
• The Hornets recorded nine shots (four on goal) plus two corners.

Notes

• Shenandoah improves to 5-2 all-time against the Seahawks.
