Seahawks Down Mary Washington in Overtime for First Conference Victory of the Season

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team (3-7, 1-3 C2C) hit the road on Sunday (Apr. 11) afternoon to take on the University of Mary Washington Eagles (1-7, 0-4 C2C) in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action. The Seahawks earned their first conference victory of the season with a thrilling 13-12 overtime victory.

How It Happened
  • The Eagles tallied the first two scores of the contest to take a 2-0 lead at the 9:58 mark of the first quarter. The Seahawks responded with a two-goal run of their own with goals from Dominic Venanzi and Ben Claffee to even that game 2-2. St. Mary's College and Mary Washington traded goals to end the first frame and headed into the second tied 3-3. Jeremiah Clemmer tallied the final goal of the opening stanza for the Seahawks.
  • The second quarter of action was another evenly matched frame as the Eagles outscored the Seahawks 4-3. Jude Brown, Claffee, and Abe Hubbard netted goals for the Seahawks. Mary Washington scored the final goal of the quarter with 52 seconds remaining to take a 7-6 advantage into halftime.
  • St. Mary's College captured their first lead of the game with back-to-back goals to start the third quarter. Claffee and Venanzi beat the opposing goalkeeper to claim the 8-7 lead for the Seahawks. However, Mary Washington responded with a three-goal run to retake the lead, 10-8. The Seahawks outscored the Eagles 2-1 for the remainder of the frame, thanks to scores from Hubbard and Claffee. St. Mary's College headed into the fourth quarter trailing 11-10.
  • The final stanza of play was a defensive battle as the Seahawks outscored the Eagles 2-1. St. Mary's College notched both of their goals in the first five minutes of the frame with scores from Hubbard and Venanzi. Mary Washington found the back of the cage at the 7:21 mark to even the game at 12. Both squads did not score for the remainder of the quarter and headed into overtime.
  • With 48 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Brown was able to find Jack Gillogly who took advantage of his scoring opportunity by burying his shot into the back of the net for the 13-12 overtime victory.

  • Brown led the Seahawks with five points, netting one goal and dishing out four assists. Claffee and Venanzi followed with four points each, respectively. 
  • Mason Hoffman and Tommy Rinder led the Seahawks on the defensive end of the field with three caused turnovers each. Sam Jaudon collected a team-high eight ground balls, while Ethan Little gathered five. DJ Walker played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded eight saves.
  • JD Nozemack and Cameron Walker led the Eagles with four points each.
