St. Mary's Rallies Against Hood to Win Season Opener

The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team opened their 2021 season in Fredrick, Maryland against the Hood College Blazers Wednesday evening. The Seahawks battled for a 3-2 victory in what was an exciting match between the two teams.

How it Happened

  • Both teams came out strong ready, to make an impact in this season opener. The Seahawks were relentless against their competitors and came up to win the first set (25-16)

  • St. Mary's came out on top in the second set, taking the lead quickly over Hood. The Blazers tried to gain momentum but the Seahawks held strong to pull away and win set two (25-16). 

  • Hood was up for the challenge after St. Mary's had clinched the first two sets and fought hard against the Hawks. St. Mary's started out on top but the Blazers battled back to tie it at 18 before taking the lead and winning the third set (27-29). 

  • After securing set 3, Hood was ready to make a statement and dominated the fourth set. The Seahawks challenged the Blazers but ultimately fell to give Hood set 4 (15-25)

  • Two losing two sets St. Mary's was not ready to throw in the towel. The Seahawks came out ready to win and took an early lead in the final set. After going back and forth, point for point, St. Mary's Chanel Lucas(#5) set the tone by making three service ace's. This gave the Seahawks the final push they needed to secure the fifth set and win the match (15-9)

Key Plays

  • Chanel Lucas was a key player in this competition making eight service aces to help carry the Seahawks to victory. Nicole Gibson and Taylor Wigglesworth also made three aces each to secure the win. 

  • Lucas also led the way in digs for St. Mary's with 12. Alexandra Bradley followed close behind making nine digs for the Seahawks. 

  • Kyra Feinaeur and Lucas were able to make 11 kills each with Wigglesworth adding another nine kills herself. 

Up Next

    The St. Mary's Volleyball squad will be traveling to Baltimore, MD to face off against Widner at 2pm and Goucher at 4pm
