Saint Mary's Falls to Widener in Saturday Matchup

The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team traveled to Baltimore, MD Sept.4th to compete in two competitions Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks started their day against Widener at 2pm, followed by Goucher at 4pm. The Seahawks fought toe to toe against both teams but fell to one.

St. Marys-2 Widener-3

How it Happened

  • After winning their season opener on wednesday, the Saint Mary's Volleyball squad came out ready to compete and denied Widener from earning a point until we gained a 6-0 lead. Widener started putting pressure on the Seahawks after that and were able to make a comeback to beat the Hawks in set one (17-25).

  • Set two was much more of a battle between the two teams as Saint Mary's was not ready to accept that loss in the first set. The score remained close this set being no more than three points apart until the Seahawks took control at 18-14 to pull away and win set two (25-16).

  • Set three took a similar route to that of set one. However, it was not in Saint Mary's favor this time. Widener was able to take a 9-0 lead over the hawks in the beginning of the set and would continue to hold the lead for the remainder of the set; beating Saint Mary's (16-25) in the third.

  • After Widener captured the third set Saint Mary's knew what they needed to do and were ready to get the job done. Despite some back and forth the Seahawks were able to hold Widener off at 12 points and pull away to win the fourth set (25-12).

  • Entering the fifth set both teams were ready to take the win. Much like the third set, this last battle would be an evenly matched fight going point for point. Unfortunately the Seahawks could not close the deal and fell to Widener (12-15).

Key Plays

  • Alexandra Bradley led the way in digs making 14 throughout the match. Chanel Lucas and Ashley Welch followed behind Bradley adding eight digs each.

  • Chanel Lucas also made key plays executing 11 kills in the match. Kyra Feinaeur was one step behind making 10 kills herself.

  • Nicole Gibson served three aces for the Seahawks while Fatima Bouzid made two in the match.
