Seahawks Field Hockey Notches Home- and Season-Opening Victory

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Audrey Dickens' (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) first collegiate career goal came at the right time Saturday afternoon, lifting the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team (1-0) to a 3-2 home- and season-opening non-conference win over the visiting Stevenson University Mustangs (1-0).

How It Happened
  • Dickens found the back of the net with 90 seconds left in regulation to give the Seahawks a thrilling triumph.
  • St. Mary's College jumped on the scoreboard first in the first period with an unassisted tally by sophomore forward Hayden Kesner (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) in the third minute of action.
  • The Mustangs responded less than five minutes later as Riley Sullivan tagged her first score of the season off an assist from Veronica Maring.
  • Right before halftime, senior Kate Stevens (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield) put one past the Stevenson goalkeeper to send the Seahawks into the break with a 2-1 lead.
  • The Mustangs only fired off two shots in the second half but Rylee Leakway made one of those two shots count on a penalty corner at 51:37 to even the game once again at two goals apiece. Maring and Carolyn Braziel assisted on the play.
  • Before Dickens' goal, St. Mary's College had an earlier opportunity in the 58th minute to take the lead as the Seahawks were awarded a penalty stroke but Rachel Barker was up to the challenge, denying senior captain Gabrielle Corder's (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) stroke and keeping the game tied.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Seahawks dominated in the shot department with a 23-5 advantage.
  • Stevenson boasted a 10-4 lead in penalty corners but the SMCM defense was ready to foil the Mustangs.

Top Performers
  • Three different Seahawks notched a goal while sophomore goalie Meaghan Collins (Pocomoke City, Md./Pocomoke) came up with three stops for her first career shutout.
  • Maring finished the game with two assists to lead Stevenson while Barker finished the afternoon with 11 saves.

Notes
  • Today's Seahawk victory snaps a four-game skid for St. Mary's College against the Mustangs. SMCM's last win came on September 21, 2013 – a 2-1 win in St. Mary's City.
