St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (3-1) hosted the Wilson College Phoenix (1-2) today (Nov.19) in a non-conference weekend tilt that saw the Seahawks come out on top, 70-63.Â
How It Happened
-
The Seahawks and Phoenix were neck and neck over the first 10 minutes of play. Wilson had the slight edge, going into the second quarter with a 15-14 lead. St. Mary's shot over 50% from the field in the quarter in what was a very balanced offensive attack that saw major contributions from a variety of different players.Â
-
St. Mary's really tightened up on defense in the second period, only allowing 10 points over a 10 minute span. Meanwhile, the offense really began to click for the Seahawks, especially over the final two minutes. St. Mary's went on a 10-0 run to finish the half, taking a 30-25 lead into the break. Over that run, Samantha Blaylock and Karon Williams hit back to back three pointers to help the Seahawks recapture the momentum.
-
Momentum continued to be in favor of the Seahawks to begin the second half, as they outscored the Phoenix 21-14 in the third quarter. St. Mary's showed their ability to get to the free throw line in the period and began to cash in on their opportunities. The Seahawks shot 8-12 from the charity stripe in the quarter and took a 51-39 lead into the final 10 minutes.
-
The Phoenix trimmed the Seahawk lead to five just over half way through the fourth quarter, but back to back clutch baskets from Stephanie Howell and Kristin Sabatini stopped the run. Wilson was once again able to cut into the Seahawk lead, this time trimming it to two with a minute and a half left. Right when the Seahawks needed her, Karon Williams hit a series of clutch free throws down the stretch to help re-extend the Seahawk lead. St. Mary's held on, 70-63.   Â
