Seahawks and Cardinals Compete in the Annual One Bird Family Game

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (3-2) took on the Catholic University Cardinals (5-1) today (Nov. 22) in the annual "One Bird Family" game that honors the life and memory of Jamie Roberts. The Cardinals were able to get the better of the Seahawks, 63-34.

How It Happened

  • 10-4 was the score at the end of the first quarter in what was a very intense defensive first ten minutes. Neither team could find their rhythm on offense, but the Cardinals were able to make the most of second chance opportunities and muscle their way to a six point lead going into the second quarter.

  •  The Seahawks were unable to get much going in the second period until Samantha Blaylock kick started the St. Mary's offense with a much needed three pointer. Blaylock added another jumper in the quarter while Stephanie Howell chipped in a jumper of her own as well as a made free throw. The Seahawks trailed 32-13 at half.

  • Samantha Blaylock continued to be the offensive catalyst for the Seahawks to begin the second half, scoring the first five points of the third quarter off of a crafty finish on a lay up and another long ball. Karon Williams was able to finish at the rim in the final seconds of the period to give St. Mary's positive momentum going into the third quarter.

  • The Cardinals continued to be strong on the offensive glass, making it tough for the Seahawks to keep hold of momentum for long periods of time. Despite that, St. Mary's continued to play hard and made life as difficult as possible for Catholic on the offensive end. Karon Williams and Stephanie Howell both had two blocks in the contest. Williams also collected three steals. Despite the valiant effort, St. Mary's ultimately fell, 63-34

Inside the Box Score

  • Samantha Blaylock dropped a game high 15 points, including 3-7 from three.

  • St. Mary's as a team picked up seven steals.
