Women's Basketball Falls to Harrisburg at the Buzzer

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (7-6) hosted the Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions (7-6) for another critical United East Conference Matchup. The game went down to the wire, but saw the Nittany Lions come out on top at the buzzer by a final score of 66-64

How It Happened

  • The opening period of play saw both teams struggle to score on one another, as the Seahawks and Nittany Lions were knotted up at 10 after the opening minutes. Melanie Aguilar and Stephanie Howell were the only source of offense for St. Mary's to begin the game. Aguilar opened things up by scoring the first four points of the quarter before Howell contributed the final six.

  • The Nittany Lions opened up the second quarter by going on a 5-2 run to hold their largest lead of the game to that point. The Seahawks then went on a run of their own to end the half with a seven point advantage. The end of half run was primarily fueled by the outstanding play of Karon Williams. Williams, who had a quiet opening quarter, started taking over the game, Williams converted on a triple and then knocked down big mid range jump shots to take over momentum. Rachel Manning also contributed with a three of her own and converted on two important free throws. The Seahawks held a 26-19 lead at the mid way point

  • Penn State Harrisburg at St. Mary's opened up the new half by trading big shot after big shot. The Nittany Lions continuously kept themselves in the game by hitting shots behind the arc. Harrisburg eventually went on to end the game with 12 made three pointers. As for St. Mary's, they relied on a balanced scoring attack that saw different players stepping up at different points of the third quarter. The Seahawks had five different point scorers throughout the third quarter, including newly transferred Tray Mobray, who has had a nice couple of games for the Seahawks. St. Mary's trailed by three going into the final quarter of play.

  • The Seahawks recaptured the lead in the opening minutes thanks to back to back three pointers by Karon Williams and Sam Blaylock. St. Mary's didn't stop there and continued their run by scoring six more straight that was capitalized by an Amira Whitaker jump shot to extend the St. Mary's lead to 11. The Nittany Lions then went on a run of their own to trim the lead to just three with three minutes remaining in the game. The Seahawks and Nittany Lions would then trade baskets, as the St. Mary's lead was stuck at three with a minute left in the game. After a made Nittany Lion three pointer tied the game, Tray Mobray hit a clutch layup to regain a two point advantage with 30 seconds on the clock. After two made free throws by the Nittany Lions and a Seahawk turnover, Harrisburg's Giahny Correa knocked down the game winning lay up to secure a 66-64 victory for the Nittany Lions.
