Seahawks Men’s Soccer Falls in Nail-Biter at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team was 34 seconds away from a 1-1 non-conference draw with regionally-ranked Christopher Newport University. However, Christopher Newport (9-1-1) netted the game-winning goal with 16 ticks on the clock to hand the Seahawks (5-4-3) a heartbreaking 2-1 setback Wednesday night (Oct. 11).

How It Happened
  • The Captains struck first in the 23rd minute when Mason Field put back the rebound of Manzi Siibo's shot.
  • St. Mary's first two shots on target came in the final four minutes of the half off the feet of first-years Franco Reyes (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and Braden Kindred (Olney, Md./Sherwood) but Hayden Dewey was able to preserve the 1-0 CNU lead at the break.
  • Both teams came out of the locker room hungry to score but Dewey and senior Matthew Kopsidas (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) were both up to the challenge and the final two goals of the game were scored in the last 34 seconds of the game.
  • Fifth-year captain Zack Glime (Annapolis, Md./Key) landed the Seahawks on the scoreboard at 88:26 with a breakaway for the equalizer with Kindred assisting on the play.
  • Christopher Newport answered the call just 18 seconds later as Drew McWhinney found the back of the net to seal CNU's fourth consecutive win.
