Meghan Stevens Leads Seahawk Volleyball Sweep

St. Mary's, MD- The St. Mary's Volleyball team hosted the Dig Pink Tri-Match featuring Penn State Abington and Hollins University. The Seahawks dedicated this tri-match to raising money for those impacted by breast cancer. St. Mary's defeated United East Conference opponent Penn State Abington in three sets. St. Mary's also took down Hollins in three sets.

How it Happened

  • Ellie Matthews started the Seahawks off with two straight kills in the first set. Julia Bobrowski followed this with a service ace, scoring 3-1. The Seahawks continued to create a five-point gap between them and the Nittany Lions (11-6). However, Penn State Abington stayed strong and tied the first set at 12-12. This persistence continued until Grace Caudell finished the first set with a kill (27-25). The second set didn't start as strong for the Seahawks, as the Nittany Lions were initially up 6-3. The Seahawks worked to tie the setup 14-14 with a service ace by Julia Bobrowski. Slowly but surely, the Seahawks stole the second set lead and set 25-18. The third and final set started with an ace by Alayna Sievert. While the Nittany Lions were initially hanging close, the Seahawks took off and created a give-point gap (10-5). The Nittany Lions failed to recover and fell to the Seahawks 25-12. 

  • The Seahawks were ready to notch another win when they stepped on the court against Hollins University. Kills from Julia Bobrowski and Alayna Sievert started the first set off on a high. The Seahawks continued to create a seven-point gap (11-4) which featured fills from Jillian Zukley and Meghan Stevens. Jillian Zukley notched the set-winning point with a kill. The second set proved to be more difficult for the Seahawks, as Hollins took the lead early on (5-3). However, the Seahawks quickly countered and caught up, tying the set 6-6. This back-and-forth battle continued until the very end where Grace Caudell notched two kills to put the Seahawks ahead. A service ace from Mia Hayes finished the second set 25-22. The Seahawks soared into the third set, immediately creating a 5-0 score. A kill by Meghan Stevens created an 11-4 score between St. Mary's and Hollins. Hollins was unable to recover from St. Mary's strong start and the Seahawks took the third and final set 25-14.
