Seahawk Volleyball Splits Hawktoberfest Tri-Match

St. Mary's, MD- The St. Mary's Volleyball team hosted the Hawktoberfest Tri-Match. This tri-match featured the Chargers of Lancaster Bible and the Lions of Eastern Mennonite University. The Seahawks fell to the Chargers in five sets (3-2). The Seahawks bounced back for their second match of the day and took down the Lions of Eastern Mennonite 3-1.

How it Happened

  • The Seahawks started the first set of their first match out strong, immediately creating a three-point lead. Kills came from across the board, with four players notching kills in the first six points. A kill from Lauren Panageotou helped create a seven-point lead for the Seahawks (14-7). The Chargers were unable to recover from the Seahawks lead. The Seahawks took the first set 25-18. The Chargers kept their composure into the second set and stayed neck and neck with the Seahawks. The lead continued to go back and forth as the Chargers and Seahawks battled for the second set win. The Chargers took the second set 25-21. The lead for the third set bounced back and forth between the Seahawks and the Chargers. The Seahawks initially had it (13-12) but the Chargers took the lead at the 16th point. The Seahawks fought hard to keep it close but fell in the third set 25-22. The fourth set started off slow for the Seahawks (3-0) but they swiftly bounced back and took the lead (9-6) forcing the Chargers to call a timeout. The Seahawks kept their lead and took the fourth set 25-18. The fifth and final set was initially led by the Seahawks 5-1. They kept this lead through the 12th point, but the Chargers weren't finished competing. The Chargers tied the fifth set 12-12 and kept the momentum to take the fifth and final set win 17-15.

  • The Seahawks started the second match of the day in the hole against the Lions (3-0). However, they bounced back quickly with kills by Arielle Lubeck and Julia Bobrowski. The Seahawks created an eight-point gap between them and the Lions (17-9) forcing Eastern Mennonite to call a time-out. The Seahawks dominated the first set and took it in stride 25-17. The second set battle was initially tight between the Seahawks and the Lions. The set was within one point until the tenth point. The Seahawks took flight and created an eight-point gap between them and the Lions (22-14). The Seahawks sealed the second set off with a kill by Meghan Stevens 25-16. The third set proved to be more difficult for the Seahawks. While St. Mary's tied the set at certain points (2-2, 8-8, 15-15), they stayed behind the Lions until their 18th point which came from a kill by Meghan Stevens. However, the Lions responded and the battle was lost 25-21. The fourth and final set was initially led by the Lions. However, the Seahawks tied the set at 8-8 and battled hard to take the lead. The Seahawks won the fourth and final set 25-23.
