Ziegler Career Day Leads Seahawks Field Hockey to Fifth Shutout Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) records her second career hat trick Saturday (Oct. 14) as the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team remains perfect in Atlantic East Conference play. St. Mary's College (8-5, 3-0 AEC) posted its second straight 8-0 shutout in defeating host Manhattanville College (3-9, 0-3 AEC).
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks opened the scoring at 10:12 when Ziegler struck for her first of the day, finishing off a feed from sophomore midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area).
  • St. Mary's stretched its lead to 4-0 in the second period behind goals from sophomores Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) at 15:51 and Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) at 21:28 and senior forward Hayden Kesner (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) at 27:53.
  • Junior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) helped the Seahawks increase their lead to 6-0 as Horn assisted on the next two goals by Ziegler at 38:19 and senior captain Audrey Dickens (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) at 39:50.
  • Ziegler wrapped up her hat trick in the fourth frame off an assist from sophomore forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) at 47:08 while first-year Katharine O'Brien (Hanover, Md./Mount de Sales) scored her first collegiate goal at 58:37 with first-year midfielder Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) assisting on the play for her first career helper.

  • St. Mary's dominance was evident in all offensive categories as the Seahawks posted a 33-1 (23-0 on goal) shot advantage as well as a 14-2 penalty corner margin.
  • Manhattanville's lone shot came in the first frame off the stick of Felicity Williams, but the shot went wide.

  • For the second time in her career, Ziegler notched a hat trick against Manhattanville.
  • Two assists in one game were a career-best for Horn while Dickens finished with a season-high three points on a goal and a dime.
  • Junior Kaley Christman (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) and first-years Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and Payden Knoll (Fallston, Md./Fallston) combined for the team's fifth shutout of the season.

  • Cat Morgan came up with nine saves in 45 minutes before Florence Harrison came in relief for the final 15 minutes and picked up six stops.
