St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Stretches Win Streak to Three

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team is riding their longest win streak of the season following a key Atlantic East Conference win Wednesday night (Oct. 18). St. Mary's College (9-5, 4-0 AEC) dominated Cabrini University (6-8, 1-3 AEC), taking down the two-time defending conference champions by a 5-1 decision.

How It Happened
  • Sophomore forwards Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) and Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) combined for the Seahawks' first two goals in the first seven minutes of the game.
  • The first two goals were scored the same way with Ziegler setting up Watkins with a pass from the near post and Watkins finishing at the far post at 3:14 and 7:26.
  • Cabrini had two off-target shots in the first period and the 2-0 Seahawk lead carried into the second frame.
  • St. Mary's outshot the Cavaliers, 10-2, in the second quarter but Cabrini was able to hold the hosts to just one goal in the second. Sophomore forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) sent the Seahawks into halftime with a 3-0 lead as Allen put back a rebound at 22:43.
  • The Cavaliers landed on the scoreboard in the third stanza at 33:30, making good on a penalty corner. Adrianna Jones inserted the ball to Sara Hussey, who stopped it and left it for Daly Ewing to fire into the back of the cage, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
  • St. Mary's regained a three-goal lead five minutes later when Ziegler had a hard, beautiful reverse sweep from the left side of the circle into the lower far corner of the goal.
  • Junior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) tacked on the team's fifth goal on a penalty corner at 52:03. Ziegler inserted the ball up to Horn, who ripped a shot that was initially blocked but the rebound popped up and over Courtney Keith, the Cabrini goalie.

Inside the Box Score
  • St. Mary's put up 33 shots (25 on goal) to the Cavaliers' seven (two on goal) and recorded 19-2 margin in penalty corners.
  • There was a potential for the game to get out of hand in the second half, but Keith denied two penalty strokes and Sammie Voelker and Adrianna Jones each picked up a defensive save to keep it respectable.

St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • Senior captain Audrey Dickens (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the team with 11 shots.
  • Ziegler finished the contest with a goal and career-best three assists while Watkins ended with her two first quarter goals.
  • First-year Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) needed just one save for the win.
  • St. Mary's win today breaks a 2-2 draw in the all-time series.

Cabrini Game Notes
  • Keith was stellar in goal for the Cavaliers, registering 17 saves, including turning away two penalty strokes in the second half.
