SCRANTON, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team came out on top in the battle of Atlantic East Conference unbeatens Saturday afternoon (Oct. 21). St. Mary's College (10-5, 5-0 AEC) used a fourth quarter goal to hand host Marywood University (4-1 AEC) a 1-0 setback and lock up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Championship Tournament (Oct. 28-Nov. 1).
How It Happened
- Finding themselves a woman down due to a green card, the Seahawks capitalized on their 10th penalty corner of the game at 48:24. Sophomore forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) inserted the ball up to sophomore defender Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who rocketed a shot from the top of the circle and Ziegler deflected it from four yards out for the lone goal of the game.
- Marywood was shut down for the final 12 minutes of the game as the St. Mary's defense held them to just one off-target shot in the final five seconds.
- The first quarter was uneventful as neither side had a shot. Marywood did earn a penalty corner at 10:29 but the Seahawks stifled any offensive attempts.
- In the second period, St. Mary's continued to hold the Pacers shotless while firing off two shots. The first was an off-target shot off a corner at 18:41 while Ziegler tested Leah Ewing five minutes later. The scoreless stalemate remained as the two teams headed into halftime.
- Offense abounded in the third stanza with Marywood edging the Seahawks, 4-3, in shots and St. Mary's posting a 6-0 margin in corners. Cydney Lahr notched all four Pacer shots, peppering first-year Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) with three straight in a 13-second span but unable to poke one through. All three shots for the visitors resulted from corners with two being stopped by Ewing.
