No. 2 Mary Washington Slips Past Seahawks Men’s Soccer, 2-1

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team (6-5-3) put up a valiant fight against Division III's No. 2 team Sunday evening (Oct. 15), dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to University of Mary Washington (11-1-2) in non-conference action.

How It Happened
  • Mary Washington came out firing as Carter Berg tested senior captain Matthew Kopsidas (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) in the second minute.
  • The Seahawks took their turn in the 11th minute when fifth-year captain Zack Glime (Annapolis, Md./Key) tried to chip in over the 6-2 frame of Freddy Rogers.
  • UMW drew first blood as Josh Kirkland finished off a short pass from Carter Berg for a 1-0 Eagle lead at 23:13. Five minutes later, Kirkland found the back of the net again with Diego Guzman assisting on the Eagles' second goal.
  • St. Mary's broke through in the 42nd minute when junior forward Abdoul Anounkou (Togo/Springbrook [Md.]) slipped a diagonal pass to first-year midfielder Braden Kindred (Olney, Md./Sherwood), who rocketed a shot into the lower right corner past a diving Rogers, sending the visitors into the break with a one-goal lead.
  • The Eagles outshot the hosts, 13-6 (4-1 on goal), in the second half but Kopsidas worked his magic to keep it a one-goal game.
  • Glime was inches away from notching the equalizer in the 86th minute as his shot bounced off the near post back out to the center of the penalty box.
  • Junior forward Alex Ochman (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) looked to tie it up in the final minute, but Rogers was there to deny it and preserve the Eagle win.
