Women's Soccer Bests Bryn Mawr. Picks Up Second Win in Two Days

St. Mary's City, MD. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Soccer Team (5-6-3) hosted Bryn Mawr College (3-8-2) for an out of conference mid-week tilt. The Seahawks got the better of the Owls, coming out on top 2-0.

How it Happened

  • The Seahawks and Owl went into the halftime locker room tied at 0-0. Both squads' defensive units came ready to play, as St. Mary's and Bryn Mawr each only took one first half shot.

  • Ashlyn Bonner took the lone first half shot for the Seahawks, but missed high.

  • Only a minute had passed in the second half before St. Mary's added their first tally of the contest. Ashlyn Bonner, who had taken the lone shot for the Seahawks in the first half, made a nice move near the midfield to advance the ball into Owl territory. Bonner moved the ball to Felicia Fishburne, which was quickly returned back to Bonner towards the near corner. With her left foot, Ashlyn Bonner launched a ball towards the net that deflected off the Owl goalkeeper's outstretched hand and bounced into the bottom corner for a Seahawk goal. St. Mary's led 1-0.

  • The St. Mary's defense continued their impressive stretch this evening and did now allow the Owls to put a shot on goal.

  • The Seahawks iced the game with their second goal in the 80th minute. Lily Mellendick was able to possess a ball near the midfield after a St. Mary's goal kick. Mellendick then worked the ball out wide to Chekesa Sife who worked it all the way down to the far corner in Bryn Mawr territory. Sife crossed the ball into the top corner of the box where she found Lily Mellendick, who had stayed with the play. Mellendick lofted a high ball towards the goal that went over the goalkeeper's head to give St. Mary's a 2-0 lead. The Seahawks would hold on to win 2-0.

Inside the Box Score

  • Ashlyn Bonner and Lily Mellendick paced the Seahawks offensively.

  • St. Mary's would hold Bryn Mawr to just four shots.
