Raines Scores Twice as Women's Soccer Advances to United East Conference Semifinals

Lancaster, PA. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Soccer Team (7-7-3) opened up the first round of the United East Conference Playoffs at the No. 4 seed taking on the No. 5 seed Lancaster Bible (9-7-2). The Seahawks came out strong and earned an emphatic 3-0 win to advance to the next round.

How it Happened

  • St. Mary's led 2-0 after the first 45 minutes of play thanks to goals from Ella Raines and Lily Mellendick.

  • Ella Raines found the back of the net just 14 minutes into the contest. Raines was able to go up on a contested ball that was sent in the box and was able to use her head to tap it past the hands of the Lancaster Bible goalkeeper to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.

  • Almost 15 minutes later, Ella Raines received a pass on a throw-in and tapped it quickly to teammate Lily Mellendick who was just outside the far corner of the box. Mellendick immediately fired a shot in stride that found the top right hand corner and over the head of the Lancaster Bible goalkeeper to give St. Mary's a 2-0 lead going into the half.

  • St. Mary's out shot Lancaster Bible 6-4 over the first half.

  • Kylie Wells picked up a save in the half.

  • Just nine minutes into the second half, the Seahawks found the back of the net yet again to extend their lead to three. Keira O'Neail was able to charge up the field with a full head of steam and find Ella Raines at the top of the box. Raines made one move on her defender booted a ball to the bottom left hand corner for her second goal of the day.

  • The Seahawks dominated the second half, out shooting the Chargers 9-1 over the final 45 minutes.

  • St. Mary's would hold on to win, 3-0.
