IMMACULATA, Pa. – Sophomore forward
Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) tallied a goal and an assists in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to a league-opening road win Wednesday afternoon. St. Mary's College (5-4, 1-0 AEC) picked up a 5-1 Atlantic East Conference victory over Immaculata University (3-8, 0-1 AEC).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks established a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game behind goals from sophomore midfielder Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) at 1:14 and first-year defender Safiya Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck) at 6:06. It was Stimely's first career goal at St. Mary's while it was the second of the season for Lopez.
- Immaculata avoided the shutout in the second quarter as the Mighty Macs recorded their first three shots of the game. Lauren Buckel made IU's third shot count as Buckel found the back of the cage at 26:54 to send the Seahawks into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
- Junior captain Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and first-year midfielder Alyssa Riggleman (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County) each scored seven minutes apart at the beginning of the third period to give St. Mary's a three-goal cushion. It was Horn's first goal of the season.
- Ziegler tacked on the insurance marker six minutes into the final frame for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
