St. Mary's Volleyball Falls in Five to Penn State Berks

Reading, PA- The St. Mary's College Volleyball team continued their United East Conference play Saturday, October 7th, as they traveled to Reading, Pennsylvania to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks. The Seahawks fell to the Nittany Lions in five sets.

How it Happened

  • The first set of the match started strong with an immediate kill from Julia Bobrowski (California, MD). This set the tone of the first set as Bobrowski notched another kill. However, the Nittany Lions were not deterred and kept with the Seahawks through the tenth point (10-10). The Seahawks took flight and created a four-point gap (17-13). The Nittany Lions fought through the end but kills by Ellie Matthews (Hollywood, MD) and Meghan Stevens (Westminster, MD) sealed the first set win 25-18. 

  • Grace Caudell (Hagerstown, MD) notched the first kill of the second set, but the Nittany Lions immediately responded and created a 5-2 gap. The Seahawks fought back and a kill by Meghan Stevens tied the second set 7-7. Penn State Berks took a 15-11 lead, prompting St. Mary's to call a timeout. The Seahawks continued to fight but couldn't catch a lead on the Lions. The Seahawks fell in the second set 25-18. The third set proved to be difficult for the Seahawks, as the Lions immediately created a 9-0 lead. Lauren Panageotou helped the Seahawks get on the board (11-2) The Seahawks were unable to recover and fell in the third set 25-11. 

  • The Seahawks were not going down without a fight. While the fourth set started with an initial 5-0 lead by Penn State Berks, the Seahawks worked hard to close the gap. A kill by Lauren Panageotou tied the match up 18-18. The fight continued through the fourth set and the Seahawks notched another set win, finished with a kill by Julia Bobrowski (25-23). The fifth and final set win unfortunately was not in the cards for the Seahawks, as they fell to the Nittany Lions 15-5.
