Mary Washington Squeaks Past Seahawks Field Hockey, 3-2

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) scored twice but the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team saw their two-game win streak snapped Monday evening (Oct. 9). St. Mary's College (6-5) dropped a 3-2 decision at the University of Mary Washington (8-5) in non-conference action.

How It Happened
  • Mary Washington jumped on the scoreboard first just 4:09 into the game when Grayson Scott scored off a penalty corner inserted by Monique Lipton. The Eagles carried the 1-0 lead into the second frame.
  • The Seahawks established their first lead of the game behind Ziegler's two goals in a near four-minute span, staking a 2-1 advantage at 22:33. Sophomore midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) assisted on Ziegler's first goal before Ziegler scored on a breakaway.
  • The visitor lead was short-lived as the Eagles notched the equalizer 28 seconds later as Scott and Lipton teamed up once again on a corner. The two sides headed into halftime in a 2-2 deadlock.
  • UMW was awarded a penalty stroke at 32:25 and Emma Bernard converted the shot to give the Eagles a 3-2 margin.
  • St. Mary's was limited to just one shot in each of the final two quarters and Mary Washington held on for the one-goal win.

Inside the Box Score
