Seahawk Rally Comes Up Short. Women's Basketball Falls to Saint Joseph (CT)

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (2-1) Matched up against Saint Joseph CT (2-0) in the championship round of the Jamie L. Roberts Memorial Tournament. The Seahawks fell to the Blue Jays 63-50.

How It Happened

  •  The Seahawks came out of the gates fast and held a 19-12 advantage after the first quarter. Stephanie Howell got involved early, scoring the first four points of the contest to get the Seahawks started off on the right foot. Howell would go on to finish with six points in the quarter. Oliva Liszt continued her hot streak from behind the arc and knocked down two three pointers in the quarter. Sam Blaylock added a three pointer of her own as St. Mary's made the most of the long ball. 

  • The Blue Jays flipped the momentum of the game in the second quarter and captured their first lead of the contest. Saint Joseph outscored St. Mary's 15-4 in the period and led by five at the halftime break. Tray Mobray and Olivia Hedrick accounted for the Seahawks points in the quarter. St. Mary's was able to generate scoring opportunities, but could not get the baskets to fall. The Seahawks shot 15% from the field in the second quarter compared to 50% in the first quarter. 

  • The Seahawks shooting troubles continued to start the second half, while comparatively, the Blue Jays really began to hit their stride. Saint Joseph shot over 50% from the field in the quarter. St. Mary's got outscord 22-9 in the period and trailed by 17 going into the fourth quarter. 

  • St. Mary's began to hit their stride to begin the fourth quarter. The Seahawks were able to cut the Blue Jay lead to just eight with roughly five minutes to go thanks to a 7-0 Seahawk run. During that stretch, Sam Blaylock came up big with a three pointer and Jamie Velandria converted on a tough layup. The closest the Seahawks got to the Blue Jays was at the three minute mark when Sam Blaylock connected on another three pointer to cut the lead to just seven. Unfortunately for St. Mary's, Saint Joseph went on an 8-0 run of their own, putting the game out of reach. The Seahawks would fall 63-50.
