Winning Streak Extended to Nine for Seahawk Women's Basketball

Lancaster, PA-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Women's Basketball Team (16-6) traveled to Lancaster Bible College (12-10) for a critical United East Conference Matchup. The Seahawks were able to start fast and overwhelm the Chargers on their way to a 68-54 victory.

How It Happened

  • The Seahawks jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play thanks to a fast start on the offensive end of the floor. St. Mary's had six different point scorers in the first quarter, in what was a well rounded offensive attack.Sam Blaylock ended the quarter emphatically by knocking down a three pointer to push the Seahawk lead to nince just before the end of the quarter.

  • The second quarter was more of the same for the Seahawks, who continued to stay hot on offense. Karon Williams and Melanie Aguilar got things going for St. Mary's, finishing on back to back layups to push the Seahawk lead to double digits. Despite the Chargers staying within striking distance, the Seahawks always had a response and kept their double digit lead for the remainder of the half. Karon Williams and Melanie Aguilar finished off the second quarter by scoring five unanswered points, giving St. Mary's a 42-26 halftime lead.

  • Rachel Manning got the Seahawks on the board in the new half with a three pointer that kept the lead at 16 for the Seahawks. The St. Mary's squad used strong defense and a high free throw percentage to carry them through the third period. St. Mary's led by 11 going into the final stretch.\

  • St. Mary's continued to get a majority of their looks from the free throw line, doing a great job of driving hard to the rim and drawing a foul.
