Seahawks Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 10 Lynchburg

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Five different Seahawks found the back of the net Saturday evening (Feb. 18) in the home-opener for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team. However, St. Mary's College (1-1) came up short in a 14-5 non-conference loss to No. 10 University of Lynchburg (2-0).
 
How It Happened
  • Junior midfielder Johnny McGrain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal 41 seconds into the game. Lynchburg posted a 6-1 run, including scoring five straight to take a 6-2 advantage into the second period.
  • The Hornets carried a 9-3 lead into halftime as the visitors edged their hosts, 3-1, in the second frame. Sophomore attackman Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) netted the lone Seahawk goal in the quarter.
  • Ian McCarthy increased Lynchburg's lead to 10-3 with the third frame's lone goal.
  • It was all Hornets in the fourth as Lynchburg rattled off four unanswered.

  • Lynchburg edged the Seahawks, 38-35, in shots and claimed a 31-21 advantage in ground balls.
  • Neither side scored on their extra-man opportunities, going for a combined 0-for-8 effort.

  • Junior defenseman Ethan Little (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) led the defensive effort with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

  • The Seahawks limited Lynchburg to a season-low 14 goals as the Hornets opened the season with a 22-1 win over Ferrum College on Feb. 11.

  • Jake Rust lit up the scoreboard with a game-high four goals while Riley Mitchell contributed a game-best five points on two goals and three assists.
  • Chris Darminio commanded the Hornet defense with game-highs of eight ground balls and two caused turnovers while Tyler Hadley made 14 stops to keep the Seahawks at bay and preserve Lynchburg's undefeated record.
