ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Today's non-conference men's lacrosse game between St. Mary's College of Maryland and Elizabethtown College came down to the wire Saturday afternoon (March 11). Elizabethtown (3-3) notched the game-winning goal with 2:30 left in regulation and then the Blue Jay defense did the rest to keep St. Mary's College (5-3) off the board as Etown held on for the 13-12 triumph.
Sophomore
Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists for a team-best five points. Doyle's first goal of the game gave the 6-5 attackman his 100th career point, reaching the milestone in just 26 games played.
How It Happened
- The first period went to the Seahawks as the hosts edged Elizabethtown, 5-4, as St. Mary's scored three of the final four goals to turn around a 3-2 deficit into a one-goal lead. Three different Seahawks found the back of the net in that 3-1 run to end the first 15 minutes.
- Etown responded with a 5-2 run in the second quarter to stake a 9-7 lead at halftime. Riley Langen shined for the Blue Jays in the quarter with two goals and two assists.
- The Seahawks stepped it up in the second half, outscoring the visitors, 5-1, in the third frame to gain their third and biggest lead of the game, 12-10, heading into the final 15 minutes. It once again was a balanced offensive showing for St. Mary's with five different players tallying a goal.
- Elizabethtown tied up the game at 12-12 with 7:06 remaining in the game as Lucca Scomillio and Langen teamed up for the second time this afternoon.
- The Seahawks had an excellent opportunity to maintain the lead as Etown picked up three penalties all within a 47-second span to give St. Mary's three extra men on offense. However, the Blue Jays man-down defense effectively killed both extra-man opportunities as Brayden Franey made three stops on four shots.
- Alex Kilgour netted the eventual game-winner off an assist from Colin Cummings with 2:30 to go in the game.
- The Seahawks earned two more extra-man opportunities and continued to generate offense, but Franey was up to the challenge, turning away two shots including one as time expired.
