St. Mary’s College Men’s Lacrosse Cruises in Conference-Opening Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team, the defending United East Conference champions, opened league action with a statement win Wednesday afternoon (March 8). St. Mary's College (5-2, 1-0 UEC) dominated Penn College (5-1, 0-1 UEC) from start to finish, commanding a 29-7 victory in the conference-opener for both sides. Fifteen Seahawks found the back of the net in the lopsided victory while sophomore attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had his hand in nine goals with a goal and a career-best eight assists.
 
How It Happened
  • St. Mary's rattled off three straight before the two sides alternated the final six goals of the first quarter, giving the Seahawks a 6-3 lead heading into the second frame.
  • The hosts put the game away in the second with 10 unanswered goals to take a 16-3 advantage into halftime.
  • Penn College's offensive woes continued in the second half as the Seahawks outscored the visitors, 13-4 over the final 30 minutes of the game.

  • Senior Mitch Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) and first-year Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) combined for 29 face-off wins as Boudreau went 13-of-15 and Ciccarello was 16-of-25 at face-off X. The duo also scooped up a total of 18 ground balls with nine apiece.
  • St. Mary's posted a 69-21 shot advantage while outhustling the Wildcats for a 54-26 ground ball margin.

  • Preis' career day included career-bests of eight assists and nine points plus two ground balls.
  • Senior attackman Walker Krizman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) was next for the Seahawks with five points as Krizman scored a career-tying four goals and added an assist plus two ground balls and a caused turnover.
  • Sophomore attackman Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) finished one point shy of his 100th career point as Doyle scored four times and chipped in a ground ball.
  • First-year attackmen Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) and Liam McNulty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each tallied hat tricks to contribute to the win. This was Martel's second hat trick of the season as he notched three goals and an assist while McNulty picked up his first career points with his first career hat trick on three goals.
  • Sophomore Cullen McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) relieved senior goalie Ben Robertson (Davidsonville, Md./South River) at the start of the second half, recording career-bests of three saves, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls.

  • The Wildcats had three players finish with a goal and an assist while Brody Borkowski went 9-of-23 at face-off X with a team-best four ground balls.
  • This was Penn College's first loss of the season, and the Wildcats drop to 0-3 against St. Mary's all-time.
