Reading, PA-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Baseball Team (9-16) concluded their three game series with Penn State Berks (9-22). The Seahawks topped the Nittany Lions 14-13 in dramatic fashion to take two out of three in the series. Â
How It Happened
-
Penn State Berks led 3-2 after the first three innings of the day. The Seahawks did all of their early work in the top of the second inning, using the long ball to put tallies on the board. Dan Weeden and Ian Walters hit back to back solo shots for the opening two runs of the game for St. Mary's
-
The middle innings proved to be very successful for the Seahawk offense, as they scored nine runs over the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Gavin Wathen provided the lone run in the top of the fifth with an RBI double, which was followed with RBIs from Ian Walters and Adrian Auber in the top of the fifth to set up a massive sixth inning for St. Mary's. Cole Tarleton got things going for the Seahawks in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. Tarleton would reach home a few plays later thanks to a throwing error from the Nittany Lions. Trevor Smith kept the momentum going with a single that drove in two more runs for the Seahawks. Adrian Auber and Gavin Wathen concluded the inning with two more RBI's to give St. Mary's an 11-4 lead.
-
The Seahawks would go on to add two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings thanks to an RBI single from George Berbakos and a Sacrifice fly from Adrian Auber. Despite the success from the plate, the Nittany Lions would storm back, in part to a six run ninth inning, to tie the game at 13 a piece.Â
-
With the game going to extra innings, the Seahawks got the one run they needed in the top of the tenth due to an error from the Nittany Lions Third Baseman. Cole Tarleton, who singled earlier in the inning, would come home to score in what ended up being the winning run for the Seahawks. St. Mary's held on, 14-13.
